Giraffe Behaviour and Social Structure (Not So Aloof)

Giraffes live in complex, matrilineal "fission-fusion" societies, communicate with infrasound, barely sleep, and run 60 km/h. The real social life of giraffes.

The short answer

Giraffes were long dismissed as silent, solitary, and simple. All three are myths. Giraffes live in fission–fusion societies — herds whose membership shifts from day to day — with growing evidence of complex, matrilineal social structure, including "grandmother" roles that help calves survive. They communicate partly through infrasound below human hearing, sleep only about 30 minutes to a few hours a day, can sprint at around 60 km/h (37 mph), and settle disputes by "necking." A group of giraffes is, wonderfully, called a tower.

Fission–fusion: the shifting herd

Giraffes don't live in fixed, closed herds like some antelope. Instead they form fluid groups that merge and split over hours and days — a pattern biologists call fission–fusion, also seen in elephants and dolphins. A giraffe you see together with ten others today may be with a different set tomorrow. This looseness once made giraffes look asocial, because researchers weren't tracking which individuals kept associating. Once they did — using each giraffe's unique coat to tell them apart — a hidden structure appeared.

A matrilineal society with grandmothers

Recent research, notably by biologist Zoe Muller, has shown that giraffe societies are far more organised than assumed. Females form long-term, preferential bonds and appear to live in matrilineal groups centred on related females. Strikingly, the presence of older, post-reproductive females — effectively grandmothers — is associated with better survival of related calves, a "grandmother effect" previously documented in only a handful of long-lived, social mammals like elephants and humans.

Giraffes turn out to have grandmothers who matter. That single finding rewrote how we think about the species.

This matters for conservation: if older females anchor giraffe societies and boost calf survival, then losing them does more damage than their numbers alone suggest.

Do giraffes make sounds?

Yes — the "silent giraffe" is a myth. Adult giraffes can grunt, snort, and moan, but much of their communication may occur through infrasound, low-frequency sound below the range of human hearing, possibly used to stay in contact across distances. Researchers have also recorded giraffes producing a low humming at night. They rely heavily on vision, too: with eyes set high on a swivelling neck, giraffes have superb long-distance sight and use the whole herd as a shared early-warning system against predators.

Necking: combat and social life

"Necking" is the giraffe's signature behaviour, and it has two faces:

  • Ritual sparring, in which two males lean and press necks to test strength — often almost gentle, a way of sorting hierarchy.
  • Serious combat, in which bulls swing their heavy, ossicone-tipped heads at each other with enough force to stagger or injure an opponent. Their thickened skulls and neck muscles are built for it.

These contests decide access to females, and they help explain why male giraffes grow so much heavier and more powerfully built than females — a clue that also feeds the debate over why giraffe necks evolved.

How giraffes sleep, move, and live

  • Sleep: giraffes sleep remarkably little — often just 30 minutes to a couple of hours a day, usually standing, with brief periods of deep (REM) sleep lying down with the head curled back. Lying down is risky on the open savanna, so they minimise it.
  • Speed: despite their size, giraffes can gallop at about 60 km/h in short bursts, using a distinctive gait in which both legs on the same side move together.
  • Range: giraffes cover large home ranges in search of the best browse, which is exactly why connected habitat and corridors are so important to their survival.

Why their social life is a conservation issue

Understanding giraffe society changes how we protect them. If giraffes depend on long-term bonds, matrilineal groups, and experienced older females, then conservation cannot treat them as interchangeable units to be counted and moved at will. It must protect social structure and connectivity, not just numbers — a subtlety that better science is only now revealing.
