Science methods and limitations
The public corpus is a discovery and prioritization tool. This page separates measured catalogue facts from machine classifications, working hypotheses, and evidence that has received human review.
The corpus contains records that mention giraffes or are classified as potentially relevant to giraffe biology, conservation, health, welfare, management, or enabling technology. Its present coverage spans 1839–2026. Relevance varies, and false positives remain possible.
Records were assembled from scholarly metadata sources and curated additions. Titles, authors, journals, dates, identifiers, citation counts, and open-access links can change as upstream indexes change. The corpus snapshot was generated on July 10, 2026. Public open-access totals are recalculated from paper-level flags because the source file's cached headline total is inconsistent.
Rules and machine-assisted analysis map records to 20 practical evidence areas. A paper can appear in more than one area. Area counts therefore overlap and must not be summed to estimate unique papers or real-world threat prevalence.
36 structured reading notes are in the internal review queue. They are not represented as completed peer review or systematic synthesis. Each area reports how many notes have reached the corpus's verified status.
The public export is allowlisted. It excludes researcher emails, affiliations, correspondence records, abstracts, copyrighted full text, local file paths, AI summaries, and unpublished pipeline metadata. It publishes bibliographic metadata and source links only.
Use the library to discover sources, not as a substitute for reading them. Corrections, missing papers, access changes, and classification challenges are welcome at science@thelastgiraffe.org.
